The Thespo 13 Jury Panel comprising of Sheeba Chaddha, Meher Marfatia, Hanif Patni & Shashank Shende judged the 4 entries that made it to this year’s edition and the results were announced last evening at the NCPA Experimental Theatre at the Thespo 13 Awards Night.

The evening started off with the President of Theatre Group Bombay, Mr. Alyque Padamsee presenting the Thespo 13 Lifetime Achievement Award to Arundhati & Jagdish Raja from Bangalore.

On receiving the award, Jagdish Raja shared a few words of encouragement with those present: “Wimbledon wouldn’t be Wimbledon if it had wound up in five years. It has been going on for over a hundred years come rain or shine. I wish Thespo the same destiny!"

This was followed by the announcement of the Thespo 13 awards in the various categories. Patient from BMCC College, Pune swept the awards with the coveted Thespos for Outstanding Play, Director and Production Design. Performances in Cock walked away with the Acting awards for Lead Actor and Actress. Ek Don Adhich was rewarded for New Writing. Janhit Mein Jaari tied with Patient for the Thespo for Male Actor in a Supporting Role.

A very honest representation of a 22 year old dying of cancer, the play started off the festival on a somber note.

There were some audience members with who the story and depiction really resonated.

A simple straight forward story told with a combination of brutal realism and stylistic devices to highlight the pain and loneliness of a dying man.

Ek Don Adhich is a play about an average young guy who has problems like anyone else. With an investment failing to double and on losing all hope, he feels suicide is his only option. But a chance meeting with a stranger, a blind man at Koparkhairane Station at 1.30am changes his view about life. A play based on the theory of relativity. There is nothing called co-incidence. Everything happens for a good reason and things that do not happen are always for a better reason.

David Hirst - Us and Them Day 2

Day 2 at the Us and Them workshop proved to be way more eventful than day 1. David's requirements included those "wonderful" plastic chairs , 8 feet long bamboos and cardboard boxes! The plan was to block the play and build the wall that divided "us and them"....

Soon,lines were learned,lunch was eaten and then began the crazy task of building a wall (silently!)... David added a bollywood touch to post wall building-breaking fight scene by making it slow motion...

Suddenly, the room was cluttered with 20 plastic chairs...After much thinking, pushing and pulling of chairs and metres and metres of tape, a WALL was built......

The whole idea was about team work and building the wall without making noise( that was the most challenging bit because we have a noisy and overly enthusiastic bunch!)

And now we have a wall, we have a group A and B...We have a "Us" and a "Them"

The next session will have some more wall building but with a twist.......

And the lesson we learned today was

Latecomers will not be permitted....!

Last year, when the festival was facing extinction, the community came together to 'save' the festival. Friends of Thespo was born, and in honour of the crowds that supported us, we have dedicated this year to them... therefore it is Thespo 13 - Theatre Tera Mera.

Thespo 13 will be held from 13 to 16 December at the Prithvi Theatre and 17 & 18 December 2011 at the NCPA Experimental Theatre. The days are packed with exciting workshops, live band performances, platform performances and the much anticipated Full Length Plays!

From 95 plays across seven cities, the four plays chosen for the Thespo 13 Festival are “Cock” (English) and “Ek Don Adhich” (Marathi) from Mumbai; “Patient” (Marathi) and “Janhit Mein Jaari” (Marathi) from Pune. The four plays shortlisted this year look at giving something back to the very audience that has supported the festival through these years.

Kashin Shetty, (Member of Screening Panel this year, participant and winner at Thespo since 2003) shares a few insights - “The festival line-up is very exciting! It made me see youth theatre in a new light. Interestingly all the plays deal with difficult questions that we are faced with day in and day out. All the plays are about making choices. Young theatre wallahs are taking the challenges of growing up head on and this is reflected in the kind of stories they have chosen to stage.”

The festival also boasts of a series of unique workshops that will be conducted by the local and international theatre fraternity. Workshops will be lead by theatre legend Alyque Padamsee, actor/director/trainer Faezeh Jalali and RJ Rohini Ramanathan. Thanks to our continuing partnership with Urban Myth Theatre of Youth (Adelaide, Australia), we have director David Hirst at the festival. We have also joined hands with UK’s Kipper Tie Theatre who will be represented by Bernie Byrnes and Jim Fowler.

Varrun Bangera, Festival Director of Thespo 13 comments: “We were clear from the beginning that Thespo 13 was to become a much larger learning experience for every theatre lover. It is to their delight that we have an increased number of workshops from the theatre giants. Thus, Theatre Tera Mera seemed a very apt theme to go with.”

Other festival highlights include live acoustic bands. We see the return of Blek, along with new entries Tejas Menon, Vernon Noronha and Spud in the Box. Platform Performances include workshop production – Us and Them, Kalakaar Ki Kahani from Kolkata, and an expressionist contemporary dance piece A.T.T.A.C.H.E.D. (See Complete schedule attached.)

The festival will culminate in the “Thespo 13 Awards Nite” on December 18^th at the NCPA Experimental Theatre. Thespo award statuettes will be presented in various acting, directing, design and writing categories. Thespo is also delighted to announce that Arundhati and Jagdish Raja will be presented the Lifetime Achievement Award. The Rajas have worn many caps over the years – producers, directors, actors and mentors to generations of theatre wallahs. Through their ART Youth programme they have been an inspiration to young theatre enthusiasts in Bangalore for over 30 years and it is only fitting that we acknowledge their invaluable contribution.
Alyque Padamsee (President – Theatre Group Bombay) shares “Jagdish and Arundati Raja are a theatre team who have done outstanding work in Bangalore and around India for the last several decades. But unique is their achievement of building a theatre through their own efforts which is an example to all of us of how to attain the impossible.”

To take the theme of Tera Mera even further, Thespo has tied up with Crossword to create informal theatre performances and experiences at their outlets in the lead up to the festival, and Red FM have provided on air time. The Crossword Curtain Raisers will be held at 6:30pm on the 3^rd, 4^th, 10^th and 11^th of December at the Kemp’s Corner branch.

Come understand the various aspects of Physical Theatre. Physical Theatre is used to describe any mode of performance that pursues storytelling or drama through primarily and secondarily physical and mental means. This workshop will focus on Laban movement for actors. Actors will explore physical movement through the various "efforts," and gain an understanding of them and how they can be useful in a scene. This will also result in fine tuning their skills.

Absurdism- A Practical Exploration

This workshop will be conducted by Bernie Byrnes.

An opportunity to create your own piece of Absurdist theatre in just 3 hours under the guidance of Kipper Tie Theatre's professional writer / director Bernie Byrnes and double BAFTA winning composer Jim Fowler. This term can be applied to a wide range of plays: broad comedy, often similar to Vaudeville, mixed with horrific or tragic images; characters caught in hopeless situations forced to do repetitive or meaningless actions; dialogue full of clichés, wordplay, and nonsense; plots that are cyclical or absurdly expansive; either a parody or dismissal of realism - this workshop will suit anyone living in the 21st century.

Workshops Day 1- Us and Them

The countdown to Thespo 13 began yesterday with most of our Facebook status messages being " 13 Days to 13th December- Thespo 13 is almost here". Yes, it was an exciting thought!!

Yesterday was also the first day to David Hirst's Workshop- Us and Them.

David has some "fun" requirements for his workshop, for instance 20 plastic chairs. What's fun in that one may say.. Well, try transporting them from Vile Parle to Andheri at 8:30 in the morning in an Innova.. Haha.. That was fun..

And the Innova was never the same...!

Somehow, we managed to stuff those chairs and ourselves and our backpacks into the car and headed to Bhavan's College to set up for the workshop.

For the first day, all our participants made it on time and so did David. And then the workshop began....

They started off with getting to know each other. Names,Professions,Why this Workshop.

Then moved on to some warm up exercises..played some games..

Working together as a team was one of the first thing's David wanted them to learn before they proceeded to reading the script. So they did some more exercises...Exciting to watch,Challenging to do

Us and Them

This workshop will culminate in a platform performance on 13th December, 8pm in the Prithvi Foyer. The play is a lovely look at the similarity of people and their needs/wants

This workshop will be conducted by David Hirst .

David is a 2008 Graduate of Flinders University Drama Centre. During his time at Flinders he thrived in theatre productions such as John in Mark Ravenhill's The Cut, Henrik Ibsen's Lady From the Sea, and Abi Morgan's Tender. In productions of Terrorism by The Presnyakov Brother and Fallings Petals by Ben Ellis , David revelled in the challenge of playing up to 5 different characters. In 2009 he completed a 8 month interstate tour with the multi- award winning company Brainstorm Productions where he was given the challenge once again to play five characters in Jenny Johnson's Sticks and Stones.He also performed in the highly successful production of Boys' Life by Howard Korder. In 2007 he performed in the Boarder Project's Highway Rock and Roll Disaster. In 2008 he travelled to Okinawa, Japan to perform in Alex Vickery-Howe's Rock Musical Once Upon A Midnight which was part of the Kijimuna Festival of Arts and returned to Adelaide for the Oz Asia Festival. Also in 2008 David was given the opportunity to play Larry the certified Idiot in Accidental productions Bred to Perfection by Ko van den Bosch.

David enjoyed performing in a creative Development for the 2010 fringe called KRANG! and directing Industrial Park for Urban Myth as part of their Out of the Boot programme. More recently David has taught First Year Dram workshop at Flinders University and has also been appointed the associate artist at Urban Myth for 2011/1.

He is here to attend the Thespo International Youth Festival in India.

·Age : Should be at least 15 years old.

· Dates : 30th November, 5th December and 9th December.

· Time : 10am to 4pm.

· Venue: We will inform you by the end of this week.

· Duration of each session: 6 hours.

· Deposit: 1000/- (Rs 500 would be returned to you, once you have attended all the sessions of the workshop)

· Last date of Registration: 25th November

The Beauty of theatre and art can only be best experienced live,
and that is what TTU did for the people travelling on the Churchgate bound local from Bandra.
Energetic, Colorful, Lively all of a sudden erupted all over.

Cricket Anyone?!

People were amazed by what was going on ,shocked some found it even amusing to say the least. Seeing two people applying colour on each others faces and then fighting over a bag of chips and the then "Cricket",never to forget cricket in any performance,ending it with a human train "Last Stop Churgate"our journey ends!

If u guys ended up missing out on their performance not to worry look at the pictures and hopefully next time u end up catching us while hanging out at your favorite joint.

Thespo 13 - Screening Details

Its been an exciting month as our Thespo 13 screening panelist Kashin Shetty and Siddharth Kumar traveled around the country screening full length plays that had registered for the festival this year. We had about 95 plays registered this year.

The screening started with Bombay on the 9th of September. The judges then went to Nagpur , Calcutta , Delhi , BITS Pilani ,Banglore , Gulbarga , Pune and then back to Bombay to complete the last leg of the screening. The screening ended on 31st October. We will soon announce the schedule of the festival. Watch this space for more updates!

Introduction to Augusto Boal Techniques

The Theatre of the Oppressed describes a range of theatrical forms that the Brazilian theatre practitioner Augusto Boal first elaborated in the 1960s, initially in Brazil and later in Europe.

Boal was influenced by the work of the educator and theorist Paulo Freire. Boal's techniques use theatre as means of knowledge and transformation of reality in the social and relational field. In the Theatre of the Oppressed, the audience becomes active, such that as "spect-actors" they explore, show, analyze and transform the reality in which they are living.

A lone Indian soldier is left to man a remote border outpost. Just as boredom draws in, he gets a new soldier for company. Things seem alright except for the fact that the new guy is from Peshawar and no one told them they were at war. Share the fun as they lay the chess pieces, haul up the stakes but forget all about the endgame.

Naali Ke Kutte does an excellent job of communicating the story of two rival soldiers, who while manning their respective bunkers get talking & slowly develop a bond between themselves.

They soon learn about the war between the two countries and are ordered to shoot the enemy at sight.

But will they follow the orders or somehow salvage the situation?

Thespo turns Th13teen!

Before we move on to Thespo 13, you must know that Thespo 12 was a success!
As you must be aware, it took place at Prithvi Theatre from 14th to 17th of December 2010 and at the NCPA Godrej Dance Academy on the 18th and 19th of December 2010. The festival had a variety of activities that were organized to provide young people an interaction with numerous theatre and similar related arts. We had plays, platform performance, fringe and workshops .The shows were well attended and the workshops were a resounding success.

One of the plays "Chakra" has even been invited to a theatre festival in the Czech Republic. This would not have been possible without your support.

Thespo 13 will run from 13 December to 18 December 2011 at Prithvi & NCPA.

We have begun taking baby steps to the next edition of Thespo and if you think you can contribute and make a difference to the first teenage year of Thespo in any way and would like to volunteer do write to us at thespo13@thespo.org or call on +91 9867562859
